Sona Imaging Aids in UVic Study – Acoustic Imaging Inspection for Building Envelope Air Leakage


We recently met with the University of Victoria to demonstrate the capabilities of our acoustic imaging camera for building envelope inspections.
The demonstration focused on using a controlled ultrasonic sound source inside a building to identify gaps and deficiencies in the building envelope. The ultrasonic signal is introduced into the building, and the acoustic imaging camera is then used to detect the ultrasound escaping through openings in the envelope.
This provides a visual method of locating areas where the building envelope may not be fully sealed.
Improving Building Envelope Airtightness
A well-sealed building envelope plays an important role in keeping a building comfortable and energy efficient.
When there are gaps or openings in the envelope, unwanted air can move through the building assembly. During colder weather, heated indoor air can escape through these openings while cold outdoor air enters the building. This increases the amount of energy required to maintain the desired indoor temperature.
By identifying these gaps, building professionals can locate areas that may require sealing or repair.
The more airtight the building envelope is, the better the building can retain its conditioned air and maintain its interior temperature.
This can help reduce unwanted heat loss, improve occupant comfort, and reduce the energy required to heat the building.
